Maltha

From cullet to bottle
Every single second, we receive around 10 kilograms of waste glass. Our subsidiary, Maltha, uses this to create various raw materials for the glass and glass fibre industries. Simply put, we clean contaminated glass cullet and fragments, which are then used to create new bottles, jars and windows. The result? Raw materials such as sand, soda and dolomite retained in the environment. Glass is the perfect raw material for new glass; it is 100% recyclable, without ever losing quality. In addition, glass recycling results in CO2 reduction because, with recycled cullet as a raw material, glass ovens can operate at lower temperatures.

In 2009, Maltha processed a total of nearly one million tonnes of glass. If wine bottles represented glass volume, that’s enough bottles end-to-end to encircle the globe – twice. Or enough standing bottles to fill more than 4,100 football fields. For many years Maltha has been one of the largest glass recycling companies in Europe.

Maltha’s end product? Clean glass cullet in various colours and sizes. Perfect raw material for the glass manufacturing industry.
