Landal and Avans reduce CO2-footprint with waste
17 December 2009
On December 17, 2009 Landal GreenParks and Avans University are to receive 'Certificates of Origin' from the Dutch waste management service provider and energy supplier Van Gansewinkel Group. Both companies are turning waste into electricity.
Together with their clients the Van Gansewinkel Group strives for the most sustainable solution for its waste streams and to recycle these into energy and raw materials. Residue waste is turned into biomass which in turn is used as fuel to generate 'green' electricity.
Generating over 500,000 MWh of 'green' electricity from waste and other streams of biomass, the Van Gansewinkel Group is the largest producer in the Benelux. Providing their customers with Certificates of Origin is proof of having turned their annual electricity consumption into a sustainable process.
Landal GreenParks and Avans are the first customers to use Van Gansewinkel Goup's Waste-to-Energy-concept. Their Certificates of Origin will generate a reduction of their CO2-footprint by 18.600 and 5.526 tonnes CO2 per year, respectively.
Waste no longer exists. That's the message the Van Gansewinkel Group wants to bring across. In their vision, waste is the foundation for new raw materials and energy. This Cradle to Cradle (C2C) concept promotes the idea that products can be designed and manufactured in such a way that after their first life cycle they become reusable or biodegradable into raw materials to produce another new, equivalent or higher quality product. With their Certificates of Origin the Van Gansewinkel Group shows that even to waste there's a green edge!
Henk Wijgers, director of operations with Landal GreenParks: “With this innovative development Landal GreenParks takes on a leading prosition in the recreation industry. The waste we produce on our parks is being recycled and flows back to us as green electricity. This marks another major step in our policy of sustainability and is another boost to Landal's 'green' image. We can now offer our guests and even greener environment in which to stay. That feels good to all parties involved."
Ad Vogels, director ICT & Facilities Unit at Avans: “Avans is the first facility for higher education in the Netherlands to turn waste into electricity. Having worked with separated waste streams for several years now, using green electricity from the Certificates of Origin to us makes the circle round.”
