Household and industrial waste

Every year in the Netherlands and Belgium, people put millions of tonnes of household waste out on the street. Together with combustible industrial waste, it is incinerated at waste energy plants. In 2009, Van Gansewinkel Groep processed about two million tonnes of waste in its incinerators, that’s around 220 million dustbins.

The process removes the waste, but we get something in return: energy and raw materials. A single bin bag provides enough energy for someone to have seven showers. The company supplied a total of approximately 667 GWh of electricity to
the grid and nearly 1,500 TJ of heat. The net energy production of the AVR plants corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 200,000 households.
