Guarantees of Origin

Waste is no more. By source and post separation, we extract as much as possible from those waste streams where we already have new applications. In the case of up- and re-cycle, waste is a raw material again (Cradle to Cradle) as is also the case of down cycling waste as raw material for the next application. Even the fractions, for which we (still) do not have a new application, are being used as effectively as possible.

We generate electricity, steam and city heating by incinerating these residual fractions at our Waste to Energy plants in Duiven, Rotterdam and Rozenburg. An important part of that energy is sustainable and is being certified as such – similar to solar, wind and water energy. With an annual production of more than 500,000 MWh sustainable electricity from waste and other biomass streams, the Van Gansewinkel Groep is among the largest producers of renewable electricity in Benelux.

We receive Guarantees of Origin (formerly know as green certificates) for this sustainable electricity.  These guarantees are then traded on the spot market. With Guarantees of Origin, companies and institutions can prove that they have preserved their annual electricity consumption.  In addition, large energy companies can 'buy' their ‘green electricity’, to off-set any shortage in their own production of sustainable electricity.

The management of this complete cycle (from waste to energy) gives us the opportunity to offer you a unique concept: your own Waste to Energy cycle. Apart from the new raw materials, we generate sustainable energy from your waste. Consequently, we have the opportunity to clearly and directly create Guarantees of Origin in your name and, in doing so, make your annual electricity consumption greener. A unique cycle in the field of sustainability, that you can pass on to your customers and other stakeholders, receiving an official ‘ Waste to Energy’ certificate as proof of your contribution.

We may not be able draw as much sustainable electricity from your waste as you consume, but this has everything to do with the fact that we - together with you – do everything possible to separate and generate new raw materials first.
